A shorter title can be easier to scan, but character count is not the goal by itself. The useful outcome is a title that tells the buyer what the item is and which traits matter most. Etsy's guidance suggests focusing on the item noun and critical objective descriptors, often in fewer than 15 words.

Start with a phrase inventory

Split the current title into phrases. Do not delete anything yet. Classify each phrase into one of four groups:

GroupExamplesDefault action
Item identitytote bag, wedding invitation, wall shelfKeep one clear noun phrase.
Objective traitslinen, 18 x 24 inches, 1960s, walnut, editable PDFKeep the traits that change buyer understanding.
Contextnursery decor, bridesmaid gift, summer accessoryKeep only when essential; otherwise evaluate for tags or description.
Sales languageperfect, beautiful, must-have, gift for herUsually remove from the title.

Build the shorter title in order

1. Name the item once

Choose the noun buyers would use to identify the product. Repeating tote, bag, purse, and handbag consumes space without necessarily adding clarity.

2. Put the strongest objective traits near the front

Material, color, size, age, maker, technique, and compatibility can be decisive. Select the traits that distinguish this item from a generic result. Do not keep every possible descriptor.

3. Remove unsupported and subjective wording

Delete claims that cannot be verified. Move subjective adjectives to the description, where you can explain them with context rather than treating them as product facts.

4. Give displaced terms a destination

A removed phrase should not disappear automatically. Decide whether it belongs in a tag, attribute, description, photo text, or nowhere. Etsy says its search system takes a broader view of the listing, so the title does not need to contain every phrase.

Three examples

Handmade bag

Before: Handmade Raffia Tote Bag, Bamboo Handle Purse, Crochet Summer Bag, Boho Beach Handbag, Gift for Her

After: Natural Raffia Tote Bag with Bamboo Handles, Hand-Crocheted

The after title keeps the item, material, handle type, and construction while removing repeated nouns and generic gifting language.

Digital invitation

Before: Editable Birthday Invitation Template, Instant Download Party Invite, Beautiful Kids Birthday Printable

After: Editable Kids Birthday Invitation Template, Digital Download

"Digital download" stays because it helps prevent confusion about delivery. "Beautiful" does not identify the product.

Vintage clothing

Before: Gorgeous Vintage Dress, Designer Evening Gown, Perfect Party Outfit, Size 8

After: 1980s Silk Evening Dress by [Maker], Women's Size 8

The decade, material, maker, and size may matter more to a vintage buyer than broad occasion language. Use the maker only when attribution is accurate and permitted.

Use a protected-detail line

Before approving the final title, complete this sentence:

If the title omits ______, a buyer may misunderstand the item or fail to distinguish it from a generic alternative.

If the blank contains a real product fact, reconsider the edit. If it contains a broad phrase such as "perfect gift," it may be better elsewhere.

Do not mass-edit to save time

A repeatable method should make review faster, not encourage blind bulk changes. Save current titles, begin with a small and intentionally selected group, and avoid changing several listing variables at once. The purpose is to learn while preserving a route back.
